AI Policy

We have a strict policy against the use of AI-generated writing or art on our site. We are also opposed to the use of AI for generating story ideas or pitches, journalistic research, and fact-checking, as these programs are frequently unreliable and do not meet our editorial standards.

The sole exception to this policy: If a writer whose first language is not English uses a program to translate their original, non-AI-generated work, it is their responsibility to disclose how they have used AI in their work, subject to review by our editors on a case-by-case basis. Otherwise, we reserve the right to terminate a contract if we suspect the use of AI in any capacity in a freelancer’s work.

As a publication, we understand that AI is rapidly evolving, and unlikely to go away anytime soon. We’ll continue to monitor how it’s used in newsrooms and everyday life, and will adapt our policy as needed while staying true to our human-centered mission and values.

While we have chosen not to integrate AI into our site’s functionality, we understand that some of our readers may use AI-assisted technology for accessibility purposes, and respect their right to use these programs as needed.
